Geelong Design Week will be held from 17-27 March 2022 with the theme taur which means ‘belonging’ in the language of the Wadawurrung people, Traditional Owners of Djilang (Geelong).
Join us for an exciting 10 days of events showcasing the talents, expertise, and ideas of Geelong’s many local designers, artists, creatives, educators, and industry professionals across a variety of disciplines.
Geelong Design Week will celebrate Geelong’s UNESCO City of Design designation, highlighting innovation, ideas and adaptations in:
- Technology, innovation and manufacturing
- Culture and heritage
- Social and community services
- Equity, inclusiveness and encounter in the built environment: how we experience buildings and the spaces between them
- Learning, knowledge and research
- Sustainability: human, social, economic, environmental and ecological
- Food and gastronomy
- Art, craft, fashion, visual communication and multimedia

Big Dreams, creative resilience and the stories we tell ourselves: an evening with Clare Bowditch
If you’re a creative in ‘The age of Covid-19’, and you find yourself entering 2022 feeling fatigued, uncertain, and a little bit ‘over it’, then… fair enough! You’re not alone!
Over the past two years, our ability to anticipate, plan, and execute our ‘big fat creative dreams’ really has been ripped out from under us. It’s easy to feel paralysed about ‘all the things we can’t control’, but now is not the time to give up.
Instead, now is the perfect time to ‘skill-up’, and our evening with Clare Bowditch is your opportunity to do just that, playfully but thoughtfully, in the company of the community to which you belong.
Join us for a captivating evening with Clare as she explores a far more hopeful vision of our future.

Open Studios
The Open Studios feature program will return in 2022. Designers, artists and makers across the Greater Geelong region will open their studio doors and showcase their work over two weekends. It’s a great way to shine a spotlight on our creative industries and encourage people to explore the region during Geelong Design Week.
The Open Studios program will be held over two weekends:
- Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March, 10am-4pm (South/East region)
- Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 March, 10am-4pm (North/West region)

ABC of Geelong
This event is brought to you by ABC Radio Melbourne and Deakin Design. Come down to The Project Space at Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus and see the bespoke design commission for the ABC Radio Melbourne regional residency where the ABC are broadcasting 24hrs each day in March.
The design commission celebrates Geelong, with an A-Z of our region, where each letter represents a special part or icon of the Geelong region as chosen by the listeners. The alphabet and windows have been designed by alumni of the Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication) degree at Deakin University, School of Communication and Creative Arts. Come and scan the QR codes at the window to discover the people, places, and stories behind each letter. You will be fascinated by what you discover!

Wurriki Nyal – to speak and talk together
An opportunity for our community to hear how the City of Greater Geelong has partnered with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners to share Wadawurrung culture at Wurriki Nyal, the City’s new civic precinct. A panel discussion will focus on co-design outcomes including a language agreement, artworks and design elements in the building and the landscape.
The landscape features a yarning circle in the public realm named Gayoopanyoon Goopma, meaning to gather. Wurriki Nyal means to speak and talk together in Wadawurrung language.

Back to Back Theatre
Back to Back Theatre – Art & Film, is proud of 30 years of community film making. From Super 8 gems to the latest digital productions, these works are unified by their committed approach to the collaborative process.
Excerpts from the Company’s films are accompanied by a presentation with a guest artist from that time, including animator and cinematographer Rhian Hinkley, director David Carlin, former Artistic Director Ian Pidd and director Ahmarnya Price.
Art & Film will be hosted by Back to Back’s ensemble of artists who identify as having an intellectual disability/neurodiversity. Join in for a Q&A session as part of the presentation.
